book addict - I can do worse things yes?

August 17th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

Welcome to the first entry of my blog. I am a young-at-heart bookish woman. My favorite quote is from Erasmus (This is not verbatim, feel free to correct): 'when I get a little money, I buy books. If any is left over, I buy food and clothes.'

Today I went to three thrift shops where I scouted books. A church thriftshop (always good pickins). Goodwill (getting expensive, though cheaper than namebrandshops) and Salvation Army. At Goodwill I find the prize, Suze Orman's WOMEN AND MONEY. In hardcover, yet. For $1.99. I could have gotten it at the library, I suppose, but I had to have it. (part of my book addiction). Suze is SOOOO GOOD. I have the YOUNG FABULOUS AND BROKE one; the COURAGE TO BE RICH (like I need courage to be rich, honestly, though Suze makes an excellent case, as usual, for soul searching...)Sally Ann was a washout except for SELF HELP NATION by Tom Tiede, a truly revealing (in good and bad ways; always good to learn about oneself) for $.99. A steal. The church thriftshop gave me a good paperback copy of the Bible. I can't have too many bibles. I collect them.

What does any of this have to do with saving money? Well, it cheers me up inbetween job hunting and taking actions to hunt and but books.I like saving money/stretching it till it cries out in pain. And books, especially books on saving money, making it last, are wonderful. Frugality for the sake of value rules. And entertainment.

Good books are the best friends.

How do you save/spend money - on books or anything else? Bye for now.

Welcome! I'm a semirecovered book addict. Smile Last year my family went through and got rid of 3/4 of our books; we sold and donated about 750 total. Then I even went to my parents' home last fall, took about a dozen books and told my dad he could clear out the rest (probably 500 or so)!

However, we've begun to bring new (used) books in, little by little, though not at the rate I used to. Smile

welcome to saving advice, looking forward to reading your blog!
i now go to the library Smile i still buy recipe books (i guess you could call that an addiction in itself) because i dont see any point in hiring them for a month and returning them.
i read lots of different topics, a lot of psychology theory books and 'alternative lifestyle' books, and it's often hard to find good ones that keep my interest, so the library i have found is a great way to go, if i don't like the way it's written i return it and don't have to stress over the money i spent on it Smile
my other addictions are the cinemas (which i now only go to when it's cheap tuesday or tickets are on special) and also collecting my favourite tv shows on dvd which can get expensive Big Grin still haven't found a cheap way to do that!
i also have a very large collection of music, but my dad helps out with that, he is a music buyer for a large company and gets lots of freebies which he passes on to me.

Be careful writing about book/reading addictions, I wrote a post eons ago, and Still get folk commenting on it.

Library and a book trading website are my ways to save on books, that and did you know a great many books are online? Old books, and or children's books generally but I like children and old books.

edit to add, www.paperbackswap.com couldn't remember the name of the site before.

I'm in such fun company! I feel like we're all together having a cup of coffee! With music, I found Pandora was pretty good. Never tried paperbackswap. So far, besides thrift stores and library sales, my neighbors and I leave books and other treasure for each other on the stairs.

I'm so glad to be with you all.
